Hello. I'm Suzanne de Montigny. Here's a little bit about me.
I'm a psychotherapist, trauma therapist, and couples therapist. The thread throughout my work has been to help people make meaningful changes in their lives and relationships, and challenge them to grow and evolve in ways they may not have anticipated.
I'm a knowledge junkie and strive to stay fresh and relevant in my field and as such, I consider myself a creative, effective and dynamic therapist. I don't subscribe to any one method, but have developed over 18 years of practice, a multi-disciplinary approach, that is adaptive, integrative and flexible.
I currently work with adults and couples in a group practice (Trilogy Holistic Mental Health) and I maintain a private practice (Colorado Premarital) working with modern relationships and couples.
I created Colorado Premarital to provide specialized counseling, coaching and education to help engaged couples build a solid foundation for marriage and to help married couples renew and restore the vitality and aliveness in their relationships.
For love and desire to endure, couples need to know more.
Over the past 18 years, I have pursued specialized training in psychotherapy, couples therapy and psychospiritual development.
My early clinical work focused on working with children with prenatal, birth, attachment wounding and developmental trauma, from the earliest weeks and years of their lives. This intensive and sensitive work helped me understand my own history, as well as ignite my passion for healing human relationships.
I grew up in a cross-cultural family and was born In Istanbul. I experienced multiculturalism at an early age living in a city that bridged East and West. This was the foundation for my interest in cultures, people, mindfulness, spirituality and healing. It has also played an essential part in my professional training and orientation.
Like many so many people, I experienced the negative effects of my parents conflictual marriage and divorce while growing up. There were so many unresolved issues, questions and tensions that were created by their lack of preparation for marriage, undeveloped communication skills and limited awareness about the effects their dysfunctional relationship would have on their children. It caused a lot of pain, instability and enduring toxic shame and relational patterns, that plagued me until I was well into my late 30's when I began to seriously work this trauma out.
It was then that my career development began. After completing my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, I pursued a variety of additional clinical training, became a licensed professional counselor, and also earned other credentials, from the countless hours engaged in personal healing work.
Having gone to a graduate school that integrated Eastern mindfulness with Western psychology, I was open to more integrative, expansive and holistic ways to heal and evolve. So my personal healing journey included psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, somatic therapy, and trauma therapy. I sobbed, screamed, smudged, chanted, moved, danced, painted, meditated, journaled and sweated over a decade...to heal the wounded woman I was.
So not only was I doing my own individual work, I also began couples therapy, when my marriage started to break down. And what emerged from my experience of marriage and divorce, was how little I was actually prepared for sustaining marriage. I knew nothing in this area and especially, how to repair conflict. My parents' marriage was an ongoing catastrophe of chronic contempt. I really had no references for how to be in a loving, connected, and supportive marriage (even though I wanted that). My longing to be in a great relationship led me to study different relationship models including adult attachment and co-regulation, differentiation, psychodynamic and existential. And so, began my journey into the world of relationships and couples with the intention of helping people understand and love each other better, deeper and longer - that was my mission.
The result is the work I do now. I believe that our individual and personal relational challenges in life, can and must be healed, in order to have a healthy relationship and marriage. And specialized marital preparation is essential in order to begin walking the path of relationship with the knowledge and skills required to stay the course. I'm dedicated to helping couples build a strong foundation to support their relationship and be able to go the distance, with the right knowledge, tools and skills to keep going.
My life and work have been enriched by many people who have supported me in my own personal healing and life journey, including my teachers, mentors, colleagues, and clients.
I'm dedicated to couples work as my curiosity about human relationships never ceases. Couples who are just beginning their journey together and couples who are courageously transforming their journey together, teach me about love and how to be in relationship. And I truly love learning and growing... right along with my clients.
